I went a short cource in clay sculpting where we made our own shisa. Shisa is the name of the doglike creatures guarding some of the shrines in Japan. They are the local mascot of Okinawa but their orgin lies in China.
The shisa sculpturs are mostly seen in pairs of a female and male. The female is portrayed with the mouth closed wheras the male is portrayed with the mouth wide open.
